Unions & Renewable Energy Innovators Collaborate to Help Bring Power Back to Post-Hurricane Dominica

When Hurricane Maria hit the Caribbean island of Dominica in September 2017, it was the worst natural disaster in the country’s history. Power went down all over the island and virtually every structure on the island was destroyed or damaged. Even now, many people remain without power and the disaster has had a terrible impact on jobs and livelihoods.

In a bid to help its local affiliate, the Dominica Trade Union, assist with on-the-ground relief and reconstruction efforts, the ITUC has teamed up with US renewable energy innovators Sesame Solar, SimpliPhi Power and Outback Power to ship an off-grid solar powered nanogrid to Dominica, which will help deliver electricity to some of those still without it and provide a Disaster Relief Office. The partners are also providing emergency supplies and aid.
